"(CRITICS' PICK!) An engaging, provocative documentary using one man's crusade against Comcast (now merged with NBC Universal) to explore issues of Web freedom... The "punk" in the title refers to defiance and freethinkers like Janeane Garofalo and Henry Rollins, who provide eloquent digressions about the electronic dissemination and stifling of information and historical efforts to control such delivery systems."
- Andy Webster, THE NEW YORK TIMES
"Admirably ambitious! BARBERSHOP PUNK advocates Internet neutrality by bringing together enough disparate voices to render the Tower of Babel a library reading room by comparison. The urgency of this complex and far-reaching issue, coupled with the undeniable appeal of the Everyman story that triggered the debate, will propel PUNK to harmonious fest exposure and tenacious afterlife."
- Eddie Cockrell, VARIETY
"A thoughtful piece of advocacy journalism. The 'punk' of the title refers to the ethos of a supportive community of unconventional thinkers... the concept fits, and finds expression in the film's raw, straight-ahead look."
- Sheri Linden, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
WATCH THE TRAILER:
BARBERSHOP PUNK is a grippingly urgent David-versus-Goliath tale about the precarious future of the Internet. Acclaimed at SXSW, Sidewalk, Silverdocs and AFI Fest (and receiving top honors at three more festivals), Georgia Archer and Kristen Armfield's hot-button directorial debut makes its NYC theatrical premiere with a week-long run, November 11 - 17.
Is "The Man" controlling the vertical, the horizontal, and the channel you'll be on? In a privatized American Internet, is big business "Big Brother," or does the free market protect and serve the needs of the average citizen with its invisible hand? With the simple act of swapping files, barbershop quartet baritone Robb Topolski finds himself at ground zero of a landmark case against the nation's largest cable provider, Comcast, the outcome of which will affect the rights of every citizen.
Following one man's personal quest to defend what he believes to be his inalienable rights, BARBERSHOP PUNK examines what it truly means to be "punk." Along the way, the film features discussions with Henry Rollins, Janeane Garofalo, Fugazi vocalist-guitarist Ian MacKaye, Damian Kulash of OK Go, FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein, U.S. Congressmen, lobbyists, and others directly affected by these critical issues.
83 minutes. In English. Presented in Blu-ray. Unrated.
